The APCC, formerly the Maritime Board of Trade, was formed in 1896. In 1974 the Newfoundland & Labrador Chamber of Commerce (NLCC) joined the Maritime Board to form the Atlantic Provinces Chambers of Commerce. Provincial chambers in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island were formed in 1985 to support the chamber's work in policy and government regulations.
Today the four provincial Chambers and the regional APCC operate under a common set of by-laws and serve as a federation of 127 local Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade representing over 12,000 businesses and professional people in Atlantic Canada.
Policy development on any issue may be initiated by any of the organizations or individuals within the Chamber movement. Policy positions are researched and developed, or reviewed, on an annual basis and are voted on by the membership at the Annual General Meeting.
The principal role of the Atlantic Provinces Chambers of Commerce is to be the advocate for business interests in the Atlantic region. The APCC serves to:
1. Marshal the business community for economic and business development purposes,
2. Network local chambers/boards and their members, and
3. Enable the business community to speak with a common voice.
In addressing these responsibilities, the Chamber monitors, interprets and provides comment on legislative issues affecting business interests and lobbies government for improvements.
