“It is recognized in Prince Edward Island as a fundamental principle that all persons are equal in dignity and human rights without regard to age, color, creed, ethnic/national origin, family status, marital status, physical or intellectual disability, political belief, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or source of income
(Preamble, Human Rights Act)."
The Prince Edward Island Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination in employment and services on the basis of certain personal characteristics or "grounds." Discrimination is the unequal, stereotypical or prejudicial treatment of persons.
The Prince Edward Island Human Rights Commission is an independent body that administers and enforces the Prince Edward Island Human Rights Act. The Act establishes a complaint process for the investigation and adjudication of complaints.The Commission also develops programs of public information and education about human rights.
