Exciting News about Medical Travel coverage with the Chamber of Commerce Benefit Plan
Exciting News: If an employee has extended health coverage on your plan: They have a Medical Travel Benefit!
The Medical Travel Benefit is available to clients who require medically necessary treatment within Canada, when the treatment is not available in their hometown. The benefit is $750 per person in any 24 month period. This coverage allows for transportation costs from the normal place of residence to the nearest medical facility.
Transportation costs include economy class of a scheduled flight, rail, bus, ferry or automobile fuel expenses. It also covers accommodation costs up to $75 per day to a maximum of 5 days (included in the $750 overall maximum) for the patient in a commercial facility immediately before or after medical treatment. Parking, taxi, telephone and meal expenses are not covered.
In order to be eligible for the Medical Travel Benefit, the round trip must exceed 300 kilometers, and the treatment:
- cannot be available in the normal place of residence,
- must be ordered by a physician, and
- must take place within 60 days from the date of the physician's referral.
Original receipts, attached to an Extended Health Claim form signed by the Insured Member are required (attached) -with an indication on the form that you are claiming the Medical Travel Benefit.
In order to claim benefits, the following documentation is required:
- referral letter from your family physician- indicating the date, place you need to go, reason and state “this service/test is not available on PEI” (can be on a prescription pad does not have to be a letter)
- attendance letter from the medical facility providing treatment
- original receipts for expenses incurred (bridge, gas, hotel if applicable)
So- if the employee or their dependents (if they have family coverage of extended health) are told they need to go to Moncton or Halifax for a consultation or test that is not available on PEI they can get their bridge, gas and hotel (up to $75 per night) reimbursed with original receipts and a claim form!
